The Science Is Still Catching Up

That biological familiarity is part of why the wellness world has embraced them so quickly, for everything from muscle recovery to weight loss to skin health. Even U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has publicly endorsed the trend, saying he has used peptides himself "with really good effect." But Stanford pathology professors Katrin Svensson and Jonathan Long caution that popularity isn't the same as proof. In animal studies, some peptides have been linked to cancer, organ damage, neurotoxicity, and amyloid plaques resembling those seen in Alzheimer's disease. Svensson's point is a simple one: feeling fine after taking an unregulated compound doesn't mean it's safe long-term, since most of these effects only show up with sustained use and rigorous follow-up, neither of which the current wellness market provides.

Why Sourcing Is the Real Risk Factor

Long's biggest concern wasn't the peptide itself; it was what else might be in the vial. "There could be all sorts of contaminants in that solution that you're injecting," he said, and for most gray-market products there's no data confirming they even do what they claim. Most of these compounds are sourced from unregulated online sellers as research-grade material, meaning they were never intended for human use in the first place. Compounding pharmacies avoid the worst of the contamination risk, but they still dispense peptides without the rigorous safety and efficacy data the FDA requires elsewhere. Even a widely used peptide like BPC-157, sometimes called the "Wolverine stack," has drawn scrutiny because independent scientists have struggled to replicate it, raising real questions about what's actually being sold. Over 100 peptide therapeutics, including insulin and GLP-1 medications, are FDA-approved and rigorously tested, which is exactly the standard research-grade sourcing should be held to. That's why a batch-specific certificate of analysis from a third-party lab isn't a nice-to-have; it's the one piece of paper that tells you what's actually in the vial.
