Lab Tests Reveal Wild Dosing Swings in Black-Market Peptides
An Australian lab that now spends half its time analyzing peptides bought online has found that black-market vials of a popular weight-loss peptide are just as likely to be overdosed as underdosed. The results add a new dimension to the safety debate around unapproved peptides and underscore why verified sourcing matters.
A Lab That Didn't Expect This Job
A year ago, analytical chemist Grace Hamann had barely heard of black-market peptides. Today, testing them makes up roughly half of her workload at Leeder Analytical, an Australian lab that started fielding near-daily requests once demand took off in late 2025. The lab spent about a month developing a reliable method before it could report results with confidence.
What the Retatrutide Testing Found
At the request of researchers from the University of Queensland and a harm-reduction group, Leeder Analytical tested three vials of black-market retatrutide, a weight-loss peptide still in clinical trials and not approved for human use. One vial had less of the peptide than its label claimed, but two contained far more. Looking across the eighteen counterfeit retatrutide samples the lab analyzed this year, only one matched its labeled strength; roughly a third ran high, a third ran low, and one vial contained none of the peptide at all.
An Unexpected Pattern
University of Queensland researcher Tim Piatkowski, who worked with the lab on the testing, said the pattern of overdosing caught him off guard. In earlier testing of black-market steroids, underdosing was by far the more common problem. Seeing peptide vials skew toward too much active ingredient rather than too little was the opposite of what the team expected, and the findings were reported to the journal Drug and Alcohol Review.
The Bigger Danger: Not Knowing What's in the Vial
Liver transplant specialist Marie Sinclair has treated patients in Victoria for acute liver failure after they used black-market vials labeled as retatrutide. She says the bigger risk isn't just wrong concentration; it's that a purity test only confirms the presence of a peptide, not whether the vial is free of contaminants, bacteria, or other unlisted substances. Analyst Grace Hamann has found that the labeled peptide often accounts for only about 10 percent of what's actually in a vial, leaving the rest unaccounted for. Without medical supervision or a known dose, Dr. Sinclair says the risk of serious side effects climbs sharply.
Regulators and Eli Lilly Are Cracking Down
Australia's medicines regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration, says counterfeit peptides carry risks well beyond dosing, including bacterial contamination and heavy metals, since altering a peptide's structure even slightly makes it a different, untested drug. The TGA reports destroying more than 94,500 unapproved peptide products this year alongside the Australian Border Force. Eli Lilly, which holds the patent for retatrutide, has taken legal action against several black-market suppliers and says it wants stronger enforcement against illegal sellers. For anyone buying peptides for legitimate research, the results are a reminder that a supplier's sourcing and testing practices matter just as much as the compound itself.
