Relocating for a conference, shipping samples between labs, or just moving vials from the freezer to the bench: every step outside cold storage puts peptide integrity at risk. Here's what our research team looks at when planning safe transport for temperature-sensitive compounds.

Why Temperature Control Matters

Most research peptides are lyophilized powders that stay stable in a freezer for extended periods, but that stability window narrows fast once a vial leaves cold storage. Heat, light, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles accelerate degradation and can compromise a compound before it reaches the bench. Reconstituted peptides are especially sensitive and should stay refrigerated and shielded from direct light. Any time a vial is in transit, the goal is the same: minimize time at room temperature and avoid temperature swings.

Short Trips vs. Long-Distance Shipping

A short trip across town, like moving vials from a lab freezer to a nearby bench, calls for a well-insulated case and a quick pace. Longer trips, such as air travel or multi-day shipping between facilities, need a more deliberate plan: a hard-shell case, sufficient ice packs or gel packs rated for the expected transit time, and a buffer for delays. Whenever possible, schedule travel to minimize total time outside refrigeration, and treat any extended delay as a reason to re-evaluate whether a compound is still suitable for use.

Choosing the Right Storage Case

A good travel case does two jobs at once: it protects vials from physical impact and it helps maintain a stable internal temperature alongside ice packs. Look for a hard-shell exterior, snug individual vial slots that prevent rattling, and enough interior room to pack thin ice packs against the vials without crushing them. Ice Packs, Insulation, and Timing

Pack the case just before departure rather than hours in advance, and unpack promptly on arrival, moving vials straight back into a refrigerator or freezer. A short written log of departure and arrival times is a simple habit that pays off if a result ever needs to be double-checked.

A Simple Pre-Travel Checklist

Before heading out, confirm the case and ice packs are fully pre-chilled, vials are secured in their individual slots, and you have enough cooling capacity for the full trip plus a reasonable delay buffer. Keep the case out of direct sunlight and away from hot car interiors, carry it as hand luggage rather than checked baggage when flying, and have a plan for refrigeration as soon as you arrive. None of this replaces good judgment in the lab, but a consistent routine goes a long way toward protecting the integrity of every vial you travel with.
